Workshop
News Narratives and Formats: Roads towards Success
Location
Miragem Hotel

Tsunami in Japan, Arab spring, financial crisis… The endless flow of breaking news which took over our screens during the last months may have eclipsed another reality: the profound movement that is changing the outlook for news formats and narratives.

In an all-digital world where television meets Web 2.0, the paradigm of news and the expectations of citizens have deeply evolved and media players - whether legacy groups or younger challengers - must find new solutions to tell stories and to draw audiences.

What are these solutions? How do traditional players keep the fire alive and modernize their flagship offers? Which formats enable young media to take up a space in the increasingly crowded news landscape? What are the narrative recipes for success?

This workshop, based on NewsNext latest research from the study Trends in News 2011, will outline key editorial innovation and narrative trends on news television through a selection of meaningful case studies from various horizons. It will also include an open discussion with the audience.

It will be moderated by Arnaud Dupont, Managing Director of Headway International/NewsNext and Benoit Landousy, NewsNext Director.

NewsNext is a research and consulting platform dedicated to international news media and professionals producing syndicated and ad hoc research on news strategies and content, and creating links among news people.

Workshop
Using Archive Material and Multimedia Storytelling To Enhance the News
Location
Miragem Hotel

In the past digital techniques were used strictly to help restore and preserve archive material.  Today, the digital era gives archives a second life!  Archive material can -- and should -- be used to give narrative strength and a powerful aesthetic. You probably know that. But here's what you might not know: archives are no longer only used for documentary or historic purposes, but also and foremost, as a key element in the experience watching news programs! Interactive narratives or online news offerings are using digital archives to give  audiences new ways of experiencing news, fiction, history or reality.

Archive material has become a primary source of enriching the news output and therefore increasing your news website's audiences. It is exciting.

This workshop, based on various practical examples, will highlight new ways of using digital archives for journalists, screenwriters and directors. It will also take a look at the technical, legal and financial issues. Finally it will explore which technologies and uses might further develop the impact of archive usage in the near future.

Don't miss this one. It's new, it's exciting, it's important. And it will drive audiences to your news programs!

The workshop will be led by journalist Bruno Masi. Bruno has worked for the French newspaper Libération  and is now in charge of Journalism and Video games departments at Ina Expert. He is the co-director of the webdocumentary La Zone, a sensory journey into the heart of Tchernobyl's exclusion zone which was released this year for the 25th anniversary of the disaster (www.lemonde.fr/lazone). In September, Bruno Masi won the France 24-RFI Web Documentary Award.

Workshop
Enriching your news story with the Human Development Dimension
Location
Miragem Hotel

This workshop will provide an overview of the Human Development data tools and visualizations, such as the public data explorer, statplanet and the DIY HDI tool to build your own ranking of countries using your own socio economic data preferences.

The standard Human Development Index is a summary composite index that measures a country's average achievements in three basic aspects of human development: health, knowledge, and income.

Also at this workshop, the 2011 Human Development Report - “Sustainability and Equity: A Better Future for All” - will be presented.  The official launch will take place the same day in Copenhagen, by the Administrator, Helen Clark, and newly elected Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt.  Workshop participants will be among the first to see where the countries of the world fall on the 2011 list, and which of the top ten drop out when inequality is factored in.

Although living standards in most countries have been rising and converging for several decades, the 2011 Human Development Report projects a disturbing reversal of those trends if environmental deterioration and social inequalities continue to intensify, with the least developed countries diverging downwards from global patterns of progress by 2050.

This workshop will be led by Adam Rogers of the UNDP.

A former environmental journalist, Adam Rogers has been with the UN for more than 15 years.  He is now the senior advisor for Strategic Communication at UNDP’s office in Geneva.  In this capacity, he advises the organization on donor relations, advocacy and public affairs and manages a team that is responsible for communication outreach in Western Europe. UNDP is the UN's global development network, an organization advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources. It works through a network of 135 country offices, delivering $5 billion in development assistance annually to 166 countries worldwide.
