NX10: New Realities As Our Focus
|
 |
Athens, Greece, an ancient city and the birthplace of democracy, was the setting for the ninth annual News Xchange conference. Underwritten by Eurovision, the conference is the international news industry's must-attend event for candid, interactive and relevant discussion about the key issues facing the world's news media. This year's event was hosted by EBU member ERT S.A. and focused on the new realities facing our industry, our organizations, our audiences and, more broadly, our world.
NX10 saw our largest turnout ever, with 407 delegates from 50+ countries attending. More than one-third of this year's delegates were attending their first NX, and many of our new delegates work with organizations that had never before attended or participated.
We were very lucky to have the Prime Minister of Greece, George Papandreou, open our conference with a candid and interesting look at the new reality of the economic situation in Greece and, equally, of the world financial outlook. Mr. Papandreou was interviewed after his speech by Alan Little, founder of Storyful, and then the floor was opened to Q&A from our delegates. It was truly a memorable and outstanding opening.
The Agenda:
The agenda for the two-day event addressed the key question of New Realities:
- the reality of special interest groups and their strategies for capturing media attention, sometimes at the expense of large and very important stories;
- the reality of the need to make money from content, aka monetizing our assets; the new reality of technology and what it means for news gathering, news distribution and news watching;
- the reality of diversity - in our newsrooms, in our output, in our philosophy and thinking;
- the reality of new competitors in the form of...newspapers! Yes, some of the fittest new players in the multimedia forefront are none other than colleagues from the print world. What do they do and how do they do it?
- the reality of social media platforms and what they mean for potential partnerships, for our viewers and for our workflow and practices. Equally, the new reality of social media and its effect on journalism - the craft - and journalists - the practitioners;
- the reality of running media organizations: a view from the top and what it looks like "out there" from the Board room perspective
Result:
With speakers and moderators from organizations ranging from TV2 Denmark, CNN, the BBC, ABC News, Reuters, Russia Today, The Associated Press, Eurovision, Sky News, Deutsche Welle, ZDF, NOS and WDR to YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, The New York Times, Aftonbladet, NPR and Global Voices, NX10 was truly a global look at the new realities of the news and information industries. For the first time in our history we opened with an announcement of the Twitter hashtag and we saw steady live updates via Twitter and other social media platforms. By the end of the two-day event, it was clear that there are many challenges but also many opportunities for those who are willing to experiment and those who are able to embrace flexibility and agility.
