A Word from Fiona Dodd, Head of News Syndication, ITN

I’ve been a News Xchange delegate for more years than I’d care to remember and will be at the conference again this year. Every year the event’s focus shifts as delegates are consumed by the editorial agenda that’s dominated the previous twelve months and the latest changes in technology and newsgathering that are driving our industry forward.
With that rationale, I’m sure that other delegates will, like me, be looking forward to talks and discussions on how as an industry we’ve covered stories such as the Arab Spring and the Japan tsunami and how we can capitalise on new developments including how news can be delivered onto new platforms such as iPads. But who knows what different stories and technology we’ll be looking at next year?
However, one perennial theme at News Xchange in recent years and indeed across the wider broadcast industry is the move to digital content and delivery. News producers, broadcasters and publishers simply want to obtain and broadcast content on multiple platforms when it’s breaking news not old news. And that’s where digital comes in as a cost efficient and timely form of content.
With this in mind, and looking ahead to a busy news year with the London 2012 Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee on the horizon, ITN Source News will be using this year’s News Xchange to unveil our contribution to the digital landscape - a new web-based subscription service for immediate download of breaking news video content.
The new website – live here: http://news.itnsource.com – is for broadcasters and web-based publishers that want daily news footage from ITN’s award-winning newsroom and production teams but lack the broadcast technology and infrastructure for the full syndication service offered by ITN Source News. The site is easy-to-use and self-service, giving customers unlimited access to over 80 news highlight clips covering multiple genres all in broadcast quality every week. The site will feature a new search function, with clips available to preview or download so that clients can quickly find and access content for that day’s news.
While this by no means replaces our full-service syndication offering, ITN Source News sees this as a step forward in making ITN content more accessible to a greater number of broadcasters and web publishers worldwide. This is only made possible by the seismic shift to digital that I’m sure will dominate our debates at News Xchange for many years to come.
For any delegates that would like to find out more about the service and how it works please ask me any questions at News Xchange or email my team at itnsourcenews@itn.co.uk and we’ll be happy to help.
