Why is the World Starving?
|
| |
The hungry are rioting, farmers are striking, and governments are falling - all over the cost and availability of food. Politicians and analysts continue to argue bitterly over the cause, blamed variously on climate change, fuel prices, the world financial crisis and the ravages of war and terrorism. And, as usual, it's the world's poorest who are suffering.
For the media the dilemma remains: how do we cover this so-called 'crisis' in a two minute news item? Are we guilty of oversimplifying a complex issue? How do we keep viewers and listeners engaged and at the same time hold those responsible to account?

Meltdown: how close are we to global bankruptcy?
|
| |
2008 has seen the world financial markets go from boom to bust. Bankruptcies, bailouts, takeovers and predictions of an economic meltdown have dominated headlines worldwide. But how do you go about reporting a global financial crisis when what you say might affect the markets themselves? And how can we help viewers make sense of the complex and often arcane workings of the business world.
We explore the responsibility the media has in influencing consumer sentiment about the economy and look at how we make business and economic stories accessible and meaningful to our audience without causing panic.
With contributions from Adrian Finighan, Anchor, 'Business International', CNNI; Will Hutton, Founder, the Work Foundation; Jeremy Rifkin, President, Foundation on Economic Trends; Onno Ruding, Chairman, Centre for European Policy Studies; Deborah Sturman, International Litigator, Sturman LLC (NYC); Liz Pulliam Weston, Personal Finance Analyst, MSN Money.

'Hail to the Chief': the electrifying race to the White House
|
| |
After the most exciting and engaging Presidential campaign in decades, Americans have finally decided who will lead their country for the next four years. But what of the election trail - the primaries, the conventions and the vote?
We study the role of the media in the campaign and how bloggers have helped make the news. CNN's Chief National Correspondent, John King, tells us how they connected with their audiences and we look forward to what we can expect from President Bush's successor.
With contributions from Dr Josef Braml, German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP); Mayhill Fowler, National Correspondent, 'Off the Bus'; Garrett Graff, Author, 'The First Campaign: Globalization, the Web and the Race for the White House'; John King, Chief National Correspondent, CNN; Amanda Michel, Director, 'Off the Bus', Huffington Post
