NEWS XCHANGE 2004 - November 18-19, Vilamoura, Portugal
The latest News Xchange saw 425 delegates from 47 countries descended on southern Portugal to attend yet another
successful news industry conference.
King Abdullah of Jordan opened the talks on day one with a keynote address delivered via satellite.
He set the stage for a gripping session on the diversity of Arabic media, presented by the charismatic
Emad El Din Adeeb from Saudi Arabia's Orbit TV. This vigorous discussion involved an unprecedented breadth
of representatives from the main Arab broadcasters.
Other sessions focused on elections held worldwide in 2004, as well as the most important safety issues
faced by journalists today (in conjunction with the International News Safety Institute), followed by a
tribute to Phil Cox, the winner of the Rory Peck Trust Sony Impact Award. The event also featured the
News Xchange's trademark "hypothetical" session, which proved so popular at our 2002 event.
This scenario exercise led by Jon Snow from the UK's Channel 4 highlighted the fast decision-making
processes that are crucial to breaking news.
On the second day, France 3's Christine Ockrent chaired a session where delegates tackled the future
role of public service broadcasting in Europe, while the BBC's Fergal Keane explored journalistic
coverage of humanitarian crises. There was a particular focus on Sudan's Darfur region, where aid
workers have often been the first witnesses of events, taking the traditional role of reporters.
Carol Bellamy, executive director of UNICEF, drew participants' attention to the coverage of issues
facing children, including girls' education, child trafficking and prostitution and child soldiers.
Additionally, delegates were given an insight into the new gadgets and editorial challenges that will
accompany undercover journalism in coming months, as well as a look into the advantages of HDTV conversion,
in a working breakfast hosted by its pioneer, Japan's NHK. The Mohamed Amin Award presentation also took
place at this year's News Xchange. The award was given jointly to the courageous freelance Iraqi
cameramen covering the conflict in their country, and accepted on their behalf by INSI.
